You’ve held it captive for way too long. What’s it gonna take? I’ve had no ransom demand, no trade requests.
I think I’m finally in a place to hold it again, strong enough to keep it safe. Not with thick, impenetrable prison walls – although some new boundaries and defenses are necessary – but with hands that are finally brave enough to hold it again.
It hasn’t been in my possession for years. Even when you left it shattered and bleeding, I was too devastated to pick it up and mend it. First aid has never been my thing, unless I’m tending to someone else’s wounds.
Is there a quest that’s been assigned to recapture my beating organ? Must I find a mythical flute and learn the song to play to lead me to its location? Is there a faraway castle I’m to climb to rescue it? I haven’t felt the echo in my chest for ages. Will it call out to me when it’s ready to return home?
Why did I entrust its safety to you in the first place? You never protected it, never considered it the precious treasure that it is. You only used it to your benefit; pillaged its warmth until it was too weak and empty to do anyone any good.
Wait… do you even have it anymore? I’d gifted it to you, sure you’d hold on to it. But maybe that’s no longer the case. I can absolutely see you callously tossing it in the trash, left out on the curb to be collected by a big blue truck with all your other garbage. And if that’s the case, this hunt just gained way too many levels. Does it even want to return to me, or is it scorned by my abandonment? Is it too scared to come back after the brutally of the beating it’s taken? Will I endlessly seek it out, only to be denied? Can it ever trust me again?
And if it’s just out there, alone, floating in nothingness, how to I even begin my journey back to it?
How do I retrieve it? I need a map. A starting point. A big red X drawn on the ground. I’ll dig, I’m willing to get my hands dirty, voyage to its current realm, battle whatever demons guard its cage.
I need it back. And I’m ready to do whatever it takes to find my way.
